If you’re seeing this late on Labor Day, the parades, picnics, political events and online deals that may have vied for your holiday attention are either over or drawing to a close, leaving just enough time for some inbox recon on tomorrow’s challenges at the office or job site. Even today, when leisure is a proper pursuit, we really do have a penchant for work.
Understandably so. Work is an outlet for our knowledge and talents. It’s a way to express and define ourselves and understand the world around us. It puts food on the table, a roof overhead, and every so often, a dream within reach.
Public Recognition for Value of Work
A public day honoring workers got its start in New York City in 1882 with a grand parade followed by a giant picnic. (Some say it was inspired by Toronto’s annual labour festival.) Oregon was the first state to make it an official holiday, a practice that spread state by state, until by 1887 a total of 30 states had proclaimed the holiday. In 1894, Labor Day became an official federal holiday—”a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” as the US Department of Labor now describes it.
Tribute. What an appropriate word to use in our industry, where every day, in a sense, is Labor Day. An industry where organizations of all sizes and specialties honor the value of human labor by participating in the creation of supportive, sustainable, inspiring work environments.
